Intellectuals, People, Republic and Modes of Jouissance
On Saturday June 13th 2015 Jacques-Alain Miller was invited by Alain Finkielkraut to his program “Répliques” alongside Jacques Rancière. Jacques Rancière is a philosopher and Emeritus Professor at the University of Paris 8 (Saint-Denis) and author of "La Haine de la démocratie” published in 2005. After the attacks in Paris against Charlie Hebdo in January 2015, he took up a position during an interview with the journalist Éric Aeschimann, of L'Obs, wich was published under the title: “The useful idiots of the FN”, claiming that some intellectuals who call themselves Republicans cleared a fertile field to the extreme right, deviating universal values, which feeds a xenophobic discourse. This interview was published three months after the great demonstration in Paris and other cities in support of Charlie Hebdo, and the day after a departmental selection in France which confirmed the rise in the political field of Marine Le Pen, president of the FN. Jacques-Alain Miller published a response on the website La règle du jeu, and Jacques Rancière replied then also through the same medium. Alain Finkielkraut invited the two French intellectuals to continue that debate.
